Times Square, Before it Was Family Friendly

Times Square, Before it Was Family Friendly

It’s easy to forget that, before Mayor Guiliani turned it into Disneyland, NYC’s Times Square was ”ground zero” for porn, drugs, and violence. It was dirty, it was dangerous — but it was also gritty and exciting. This is a reminder of what ”The Deuce” was before its makeover.

NYC in the late 80′s was so cool and different than anywhere else in the US. The disneyfication and all the chain stores moving in just ruined the whole place. It is much much safer now but the energy is totally gone. You know its bad when there is a olive garden in times square.

as a longtime NYC resident i can tell you that pre-rudy – times square 42nd street was a disgusting place. people are now trying to rewrite and romantisize Times Sq – 42nd street. take my word for it it was an area you would be leary of during the day and avoid at night. it was a dirty filthy place where bums and thugs hung out. even the porn places sucked.

Times Square was a terrible place back then, where it was very likely you would get mugged if you were walking around at night. (I was.)

That said, although now it is safe, it has also lost some of its “New York-ness.” What is the point of a tourist coming all the way to New York, to go to Times Square, only to eat in a f#%$ing TGI Friday’s?

jim, I’m with you. there is no romance to nasty ugly places. disneyfication is meh, but violence, sleaze and bad smells are worse.

Post made by wtf: you’re obviously still on crack homie. WTF would you like to happen that they they take your kind out of the photos? Ask yourself why you people are in the photos. Realize that so-called “racism” does NOT exist because we all belong to the HUMAN RACE so stop smoking and do something productive that would benefit American society..

I guess you don’t realize that there are many places in the U.S. where there is no Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s, Olive Garden, etc. What you consider exotic depends on where you came from. I don’t think I tasted Chinese food until I left my home town and went to college.
